Never be afraid to express yourself.
Especially in the walls of your own home. Too often we get caught up in wanting to look the way we think we should, and the same goes in our homes. We hear about trends, see all of the pretty pictures in magazines. And sometimes we get caught up in this and forget to do what we actually love.
Well guess what. You can still have a pretty home filled with what you love, that shows who you are. In the end, you should be decorating your home for you, not anyone else.
We should feel safe to express ourselves in our home. Our homes can be a canvas for our personality to show, and there are simple ways to do it.
How, you ask?
Artwork- We can choose artwork that speaks to us, that shows what we love. There are so many amazing artists and art forms to choose from that we can all find something unique to hang on our walls. It is always fun to check out local artists, or sift through vintage art at thrift stores and antique malls.
Colours- We all have our favourite colours. And it is always fun to include them in our homes. There are so many ways you can do this. Through your textiles, artwork, accent pieces. Or if you are feeling super bold, you can throw it on your walls! The walls in our living room are a darker teal and I love it. I also have a lilac purple in our sunroom. If you are not feeling as bold, just throw touches of it around the room!
Personalized Touches- Photographs, sentimental pieces that have been passed down, souvenirs from vacations. These will be unique to you and having that personal touch makes it feel like more your own.
Themes- Create a different theme in your room, and surround yourself in stuff you love. If you are a sports fan, use sports memorabilia or use the colours of your favourite team as accents. Love the ocean? Make your bedroom beach themed!
Statement pieces- Find that one piece you just cannot go without. A good conversation starter. Make it bold. It could be a one of a kind vintage piece, an ornate sculpture, a massive piece of art, a cool piece of furniture. I know I have always wanted a bright yellow chair, and am still trying to find the perfect one.
Handmade and DIY. If you are feeling crafty, there are so many ideas on Pinterest that are easy to create. You can make a few of your own decor pieces, especially around holidays. Or you may find neat ways to display what you already have.
Or, you can leave the creating to others! There are so many talented makers out there to choose from, most of them making one of a kind pieces. You know they have put a lot of work into their art so the quality is amazing. Go to a local craft market on the weekend in your area and see what cool things you can find! We have prints hanging in our home from a local artist, as well as some smaller fun accents. I personally love pottery!
Bottom line, when you walk into your home it should make you smile. It should feel like home. I would love to hear below what some of your personal touches in your home are and how your home reflects you.
Much love,
Jess
